AITN and MPBI organized Professional Development Program on “Public Health Management in Natural Disaster”

Asian Integrated Training Network (AITN) cooperation with Indonesian Society for Disaster Management (MPBI) organized training and exposure visits program on “Public Health Management in Natural Disaster” for North Western Province, Srilanka health sector officials in Indonesia.  The training is a part of capacity building initiatives carried out by North Western’s Provincial Health Department, to improve healthcare delivery for its population in disaster occurrence.

Training and Exposure Visit on Public Health Management on Disaster in Indonesia was conducted in 7 days, took place from 22 to 28 October 2017 with agenda of visit to National Health Crisis Center, to National Command Center (NCC 119), PHEOC (Public Health Emergency Operation Center), BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), LSP PB, RS Islam Pondok Kopi (Private Hospital), RS PMI Bogor (Indonesia Redcross Hospital) . It is expected that from this visit, the Sri Lanka Delegation can improve the concepts and skills in public health management, promote leadership and capacity building in management, and deepen understanding of the management system in natural disasters.

The number of participants is 7 persons, consist of 4 male and 3 female. Namely are Dr. N. Fareed, Ms. Nandani Jayathilake, Mr. P. W. S. K. Wijesinghe, Dr. L. W. R. I. Saranga, Dr. Geethika Amarasinghe, Ms. H. G. D. Amarasinghe, and Dr. C. P. Gallege. The participant comment that in this program they studied public health management in the natural disaster. Experiences on the formation of a system of risk management certification, concept of safety hospital, risk management committee to manage hospitals, community-based hospital system, and health insurance scheme are new things for them. Therefore this is a highly enthusiastic program in their case. Emergency information center of the Health Minister also a good and new thing for the participants.

In general, the program delivered about Indonesia’s disaster management and its importance, strength and current issues. Firstly, learned about disaster management system and national disaster management agency and health ministry activity regarding disaster management and 119 services. According to the participant’s responses, these are very interesting and can be considered as guidance for their province. Professional Certification Agency is very important. Information system and Emergency Operating Centre BNPB has been visited and learned much about meteorological activity very well. Prevention and curiosity systems regarding disaster and helping to the crisis in two hospitals were observed sufficiently.
